Da Xian Xiong Wan大陷胸丸

Major Sinking into the Chest Pill

Purging Downward 泻下剂Cold Purgation 寒下

Indications

Drains heat and drives out waterOpens the Lung and moves water from the upper burnerDelivers harsh drugs slowly

Heat and water bound in the upper chest. Because the bind sits above rather than below, a fast downward purge would pass beneath it; the formula therefore reaches upward with Lung herbs and slows itself with honey so the drugs stay in contact with the obstruction.

Clinical Manifestations

  • Chest-bind pattern seated high, with neck and nape stiffness
  • Hard, painful epigastrium with laboured breathing
  • Fullness below the heart with cough and difficulty lying flat
  • Constipation accompanying an upper-body water-heat bind
TongueYellow greasy coating
PulseDeep and tight

Modern Applications

Common adjustments

  • Bind low and severe, abdomen stone-hard — the decoction form Da Xian Xiong Tang acts faster and lower
  • Breathlessness prominent — the Ting Li Zi share is the part of the formula addressing it

Contraindications

Contains toxic Gan Sui and is an attack formula for a confirmed excess pattern only. Withheld in deficiency, in the frail and elderly, and after childbirth. Gan Sui must not be combined with Gan Cao. Discontinue as soon as the bowel opens.

For licensed practitioners’ reference only — not a self-treatment guide.

Pregnancy

Absolutely contraindicated in pregnancy. The honey base slows the action but does not change what is inside: Gan Sui is toxic and drastically water-expelling, and Da Huang with Mang Xiao purges hard. Also unsuitable while breastfeeding.
