Indications

Clears heat in the chest and diaphragmDrains fire and unblocks the bowelResolves toxicity and vents heat outward

Heat accumulated in the upper and middle burners: fire is pent up above the diaphragm while dry heat has bound the bowel below. Draining the bowel gives the trapped upper heat somewhere to go.

Clinical Manifestations

  • Mouth and tongue ulcers with constipation
  • Burning heat in the chest, restless sleep
  • Sore swollen throat with fever
  • Nosebleed or bleeding gums with heat above
  • Fever with irritability, thirst and dry stools

Contraindications

Not for mouth sores or throat pain arising from yin deficiency fire, which recur and are worse when tired — purging would deplete further. Not for the elderly and frail, nor for loose stools.

Pregnancy

Contraindicated in pregnancy — it contains both Da Huang and Mang Xiao, purgatives that are avoided during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
