Indications
Qi and blood deficiency of Heart and Spleen after prolonged illness, with the spirit unsettled because there is not enough blood to house it.
Clinical Manifestations
- Long illness with exhaustion, poor appetite and insomnia
- Palpitations, anxiety and poor memory in a depleted person
- Dry skin, dry throat and weight loss after chronic disease
- Sores that fail to close after they have drained

Common adjustments
- Cough with breathlessness prominent — increase Wu Wei Zi 五味子 and add Mai Men Dong
- Insomnia predominant — add Suan Zao Ren 酸枣仁 and Bai Zi Ren 柏子仁
- Chronic non-healing sores — increase Huang Qi 黄芪
Contraindications
Not while an exterior pattern or active infection is present, and not for yin-deficient heat with a red peeled tongue — the warming sweet herbs are inappropriate there. The rich composition can cause fullness if the middle burner is obstructed.

Pregnancy
Use with caution in pregnancy: Rou Gui (as gui xin) is hot and is generally avoided or minimised in pregnancy. The treating practitioner decides.
