Indications
Fire toxicity flooding all three burners with the bowel obstructed: with the stools blocked the fire has no outlet, so a purgative is added to the fire-draining base.
Clinical Manifestations
- Huang Lian Jie Du Tang pattern with constipation
- Fire toxicity with mouth sores and swollen bleeding gums
- Toxic sores and abscesses with fever
- Nosebleed or bleeding gums from blazing fire

- Toxic sores prominent — add Jin Yin Hua 金银花 and Lian Qiao 连翘
- Bleeding gums or nosebleed — add Bai Mao Gen 白茅根 and Mu Dan Pi 牡丹皮
- Fluids already damaged — add Sheng Di Huang 生地黄 and Xuan Shen 玄参
Contraindications
A cold, draining and purging formula — not for deficiency heat, not for Spleen and Stomach deficiency cold, and not for long-term use. Stop when the fire pattern breaks.

Pregnancy
Contraindicated in pregnancy — Da Huang purges the bowel and the remaining herbs are strongly cold; both are avoided in pregnancy.
