Contraindications

Not for dysentery from pure damp-heat or heat-toxin in a strong patient, where lifting the pathogen upward is the wrong direction. Dysentery with blood, high fever or dehydration — and any such illness in a child or an elderly person — is a medical emergency and needs care beyond herbs.

For licensed practitioners’ reference only — not a self-treatment guide.

Pregnancy

Use with caution in pregnancy and only under supervision. There is no Ma Huang, but Chuan Xiong moves blood and Qiang Huo and Du Huo are strongly dispersing; a dysenteric illness in pregnancy needs medical care first, with any herbs adjusted by the practitioner.
