Indications

Augments qi and tonifies the bloodStrengthens the SpleenNourishes the Heart, calms the spirit

Spleen-qi and Heart-blood dual deficiency: worry and overexertion injure both generation and governance of blood. Also Spleen-not-governing-blood bleeding patterns — the qi is tonified so the blood is held.

Clinical Manifestations

  • Palpitations, insomnia, dream-disturbed sleep
  • Fatigue with poor appetite
  • Forgetfulness from overthinking
  • Bleeding of Spleen failing to govern blood (early menses, purpura)

Modern Applications

Common adjustments

  • Pronounced blood deficiency — add Shu Di Huang 熟地黄, e.g. as Hei Gui Pi Tang
  • Bleeding predominant — add charred stanching herbs per pattern

Contraindications

Not for insomnia or bleeding from heat excess or yin-deficiency fire — warming tonics feed the heat.
