Indications

Nourishes yin and releases the exteriorVents wind-heat lightlyGenerates fluids and eases a dry throat

Wind-heat in the exterior in a yin-deficient constitution: releasing alone would strip fluids further, tonifying alone would hold the pathogen in.

Clinical Manifestations

  • Cold in a dry, thin, yin-deficient patient
  • Fever with a dry throat and cough and little sputum
  • Cold in an elderly patient with a red, peeled tongue
  • Wind-heat after a febrile illness has dried the fluids
TongueRed with little coating
PulseRapid, often thin

Contraindications

Not for a wind-cold pattern with clear chills and no thirst, and not for a damp, phlegm-laden patient with a greasy coating — the moistening herbs would thicken the damp. If the fluid picture is normal, an ordinary wind-heat formula is the better and lighter choice.

For licensed practitioners’ reference only — not a self-treatment guide.

Pregnancy

Generally acceptable in pregnancy under practitioner supervision — a moistening, mildly venting formula with no Ma Huang, no aconite and no blood-movers. Fever in pregnancy still calls for medical assessment before treatment.
