Remove Painful Obstruction Decoction
Ingredients7 herbs
Indications
Wind-cold-damp painful obstruction blocking the channels: the three pathogens together lodge in the channels of the limbs, and the blood no longer nourishes them, so pain and numbness appear together.

- Chronic joint pain worse in cold damp weather
- Wandering aches of the limbs
- Stiffness of the shoulders after long exposure to cold

Common adjustments
- Cold predominates with severe fixed pain — add Zhi Chuan Wu 制川乌 under close supervision, decocted first
- Damp predominates with swelling and heaviness — add Yi Yi Ren 薏苡仁 and Cang Zhu 苍术
- Wind predominates with roaming pain — add Fang Feng 防风 and Wei Ling Xian 威灵仙
- Long illness with blood deficiency and numbness — add Ji Xue Teng 鸡血藤 and Bai Shao 白芍
- Heat signs have appeared — remove Gui Xin and add Ren Dong Teng 忍冬藤
Contraindications
Not for damp-heat painful obstruction with hot, red, swollen joints — the warming herbs will aggravate it. It contains Ru Xiang, which moves blood and can irritate the stomach; take it after food. Shoulder or arm pain with progressive weakness, wasting or loss of sensation needs medical investigation rather than herbs alone.
For licensed practitioners’ reference only — not a self-treatment guide.
Pregnancy
Contraindicated in pregnancy — it contains Ru Xiang and Chuan Xiong, both strongly blood-moving, together with warming Gui Xin.
