Indications
Lung and Kidney yin deficiency. The Kidney no longer moistens upward and the Lung has no fluid of its own left, so a dry cough persists on a background of general yin depletion.
Clinical Manifestations
- Chronic dry cough with little or blood-streaked sputum
- Shortness of breath on exertion with a dry throat
- Night sweats and afternoon heat in a long-standing cough
- Hoarseness and dryness of the throat

Modern Applications
Common adjustments
- Blood-streaked sputum — add Mo Han Lian 墨旱莲 and Bai Ji 白芨
- Marked steaming bone heat — add Di Gu Pi 地骨皮 and Zhi Mu 知母
- Breathlessness with the Kidney failing to grasp qi — increase Wu Wei Zi 五味子 and add Shan Zhu Yu 山茱萸
Contraindications
Not for an acute cough from an exterior invasion or from phlegm-damp — the rich, astringing herbs would trap the pathogen. Not for a productive cough with copious sputum. May cause fullness or loose stool where the Spleen is weak.
For licensed practitioners’ reference only — not a self-treatment guide.
Pregnancy
Generally compatible in pregnancy where Lung and Kidney yin deficiency is clear; it contains no purgative or blood-breaking herbs. Use under the guidance of the treating practitioner.
