Contraindications

Not for prolonged bloody urine from deficiency — a pale, exhausted patient with a weak pulse needs tonification, not draining. The bitter cold and diuretic herbs injure the Spleen and consume fluids, so the course is kept short. Blood in the urine always requires medical investigation: it can indicate stones, infection or malignancy. Mu Tong must be sourced as Akebiae Caulis; the aristolochic-acid-containing is nephrotoxic and prohibited.

For licensed practitioners’ reference only — not a self-treatment guide.

Pregnancy

Contraindicated in pregnancy unless a practitioner directs otherwise. Mu Tong and Hua Shi are strongly draining and classically restricted in pregnancy, and Pu Huang is listed among the herbs pregnant women should avoid because it moves blood. Blood in the urine during pregnancy needs prompt medical assessment. Pu Huang and Dang Gui may add modestly to the effect of anticoagulant medication.
