Summer-heat with damp, complicated by an externally contracted cold. Heat is already inside, yet the surface is shut, so neither warming alone nor cooling alone will do.
Clinical Manifestations
- Summer fever with headache and no sweating
- Aversion to cold in hot weather alongside thirst and a flushed face
- Chest oppression in the hot season
- Early summer febrile illness with a white greasy coating
- Air-conditioning chills over an underlying summer heat

Modern Applications
Common adjustments
- Heat clearly dominant, high fever — increase Lian Qiao 连翘 and Jin Yin Hua 金银花, reduce Xiang Ru
- Damp dominant, thick greasy coating — add Huo Xiang 藿香 and Pei Lan 佩兰
- Sore throat — add Niu Bang Zi 牛蒡子
Contraindications
Stop once sweating comes — the classical instruction is to use it only while sweat is absent, and continuing to force the surface open wastes fluids in a hot season. Not for exterior deficiency with spontaneous sweating, and not for heat-stroke with collapse or confusion, which needs emergency care.
For licensed practitioners’ reference only — not a self-treatment guide.
Pregnancy
Use with caution in pregnancy — it induces sweating and Hou Po moves qi downward; short courses only, under practitioner supervision.
