Indications

Kidney yang insufficiency; also the pattern of yin excess repelling yang, in which cold within pushes a false heat to the surface.

Clinical Manifestations

  • Cold limbs with a weak spirit and low energy
  • Aching cold lower back with abdominal pain
  • Impotence or infertility from Kidney yang deficiency
  • True cold with false heat — a flushed face over cold limbs

Contraindications

Not for yin deficiency with genuine heat, and not where damp-heat is present — the warming herbs would drive it. Distinguishing true heat from the false heat of yin excess repelling yang is essential before prescribing; getting it wrong is harmful.

Pregnancy

Contraindicated in pregnancy. It contains prepared Fu Zi and Rou Gui, both classically avoided in pregnancy; Fu Zi is toxic unless correctly processed.
