Indications
Kidney yang depletion with essence and blood insufficient. Warming alone will not restore the substance that has been lost, so an essence-filling animal medicinal is used with the warming herbs.
Clinical Manifestations
- Cold feet with swelling and a dark complexion
- Tinnitus and hearing loss with a weak lower back
- Wasting, weak knees and difficulty walking
- Reduced urine output with cold in the lower back

Common adjustments
- Essence depletion prominent — add Tu Si Zi 菟丝子 and Rou Cong Rong 肉苁蓉
- Oedema prominent — consider Jia Wei Shen Qi Wan 加味肾气丸 instead
- Deficiency heat appears during treatment — reduce Rou Gui 肉桂 and Fu Zi
Contraindications
Not for yin deficiency with heat, and not while there is any active infection or heat pattern. Lu Rong is strongly warming and can cause headache, restlessness, nosebleed or a rise in blood pressure if the pattern is misread; start low. Deer antler is an animal product — see the sourcing note.

Pregnancy
Contraindicated in pregnancy — it contains prepared Fu Zi and Rou Gui, both classically avoided in pregnancy, alongside strongly warming Lu Rong.
