Contraindications

Not for oedema from damp-heat or from an exterior pattern, and not where there is yin deficiency with heat — Fu Zi and Rou Gui would aggravate it. New or rapidly worsening swelling requires medical assessment for cardiac, renal and hepatic causes before it is treated as a deficiency pattern.

For licensed practitioners’ reference only — not a self-treatment guide.

Pregnancy

Contraindicated in pregnancy. It contains prepared Fu Zi, Rou Gui and Niu Xi — Fu Zi is toxic if improperly prepared, and Niu Xi moves blood downward; all three are classically avoided in pregnancy.
