Modern Applications
Common adjustments
- Summerheat and damp predominate — increase Hua Shi 滑石 and add Yi Yi Ren 薏苡仁
- No constipation — remove Mang Xiao 芒硝 and reduce Da Huang 大黄
- Rash slow to vent in a child — increase Jing Jie 荆芥 and Dan Dou Chi 淡豆豉, and reduce the purging herbs
Contraindications
As with the parent formula, only for excess patterns. Not for the frail or elderly, not with a weak Spleen and loose stool, not in a deficiency fever. Note that some later transmissions of Yi Yuan San add cinnabar, a mercury mineral — that version is not used, and any product listing cinnabar should be refused.
For licensed practitioners’ reference only — not a self-treatment guide.
Pregnancy
Contraindicated in pregnancy — it carries the whole purging and sweating body of Fang Feng Tong Sheng San, including Da Huang, Mang Xiao and Ma Huang.
