Modern Applications
Common adjustments
- Discharge yellow and sticky with an odour — add Huang Bai 黄柏 and Che Qian Zi 车前子 for damp-heat, or use Yi Huang Tang 易黄汤 instead
- Cold in the lower abdomen with clear watery discharge — add Bu Gu Zhi 补骨脂 and Rou Gui 肉桂
- Discharge very copious and unrelenting — add Qian Shi 芡实 and Long Gu 龙骨 to bind as well as transform
Contraindications
Not for damp-heat or toxic discharge — thick yellow or green discharge, a foul smell, itching, burning or blood-streaking points to heat or infection, which needs clearing and a medical diagnosis. New, bloody or foul discharge in any patient should be investigated before it is treated as a deficiency pattern.
For licensed practitioners’ reference only — not a self-treatment guide.
Pregnancy
Used with caution in pregnancy and only on practitioner advice — the formula itself is mild, but discharge during pregnancy needs an obstetric assessment before it is treated.
