Indications

Malarial disorder of the damp-heat type, heat predominating. Damp-heat is lodged in the Spleen and Stomach while the pathogen still moves in and out of shaoyang, which is why the attacks recur on a cycle.

Clinical Manifestations

  • Malarial attacks with more heat than chill
  • Bitter mouth and dry throat during a periodic fever
  • Epigastric stuffiness and abdominal distension with attacks
  • Dark scanty urine in a damp-heat febrile illness
  • Poor appetite with a greasy tongue coat

Contraindications

Not for malarial attacks in which the chill predominates or in which the patient is visibly depleted — the formula is drying and cooling. Suspected malaria requires prompt medical diagnosis and treatment; herbs should not replace it.

Pregnancy

Use with caution in pregnancy — the formula contains prepared Ban Xia and qi-breaking Qing Pi. Prescribe only under the supervision of a licensed practitioner.
